Maharat Foundation is pleased to invite you to an online debate session through Zoom platform entitled “Public Communication, an Effective Tool to Enhance Access to Health Information,” on Friday, March 19th, at 15:00 in the afternoon, Beirut time (14:00 CET time).
Access to health information is essential to contain COVID-19 epidemic, but due to social and economic inequality, the ability of all segments of society to acquire this information is affected.
The discussion will revolve around the need for governments’ transparency with regard to their strategies to combat the epidemic and their options for health measures in order to contribute to an environment conducive to all groups, including the most marginalized, that entitles them to access health services and all the information necessary to protect their health. This can be realized through effective communication strategies that enhance the ability of journalists as well as the civil society to access information and accountability.
This event will gather:
- Dr. Tamar Kabakian, Associate professor and Researcher at the American University of Beirut, Faculty of Health on the conclusions of a paper analyzing the social context of health information and false news during COVID-19 in Lebanon, as well as the efforts of public communication in Lebanon to contain the epidemic.
- Lina Abu Murad, National E-Health programme director at the Ministry of Public Health, on the ministry’s efforts to enhance access to information to all groups, including the most marginalized, challenges and lessons learned.
- Raquel Fernandez, Chief of Communication and Private Partnerships at UNICEF and Luca Solemio, Chief of Communication for Development at UNICEF, on the communication and networking strategy with sectors, with the purpose of enhancing access to health information, challenges and lessons learned.
- Terje Andreas, Director of “CHAIN”, a research center in Norway that brings together academia, UN entities, civil society and the private sector to ensure a balance between research, policies and practices, especially in the field of public health and inequality, on the European experience to enhance communication efforts and access to information to all segments.
The meeting will issue a series of recommendations to enhance the right to access information and public communication efforts to enable all society groups to make healthy decisions that contribute to the elimination of the pandemic.
This session comes as part of a series of meetings and other activities that Maharat will conduct in cooperation with EuroHealthNet, a European network of actors in the field of public health, within the framework of a campaign coached by the EU-funded regional programme Med Dialogue for Rights and Equality.
